The 2011 Green Futures Scholarship was awarded to graduating senior D.J. Savarese at Grinnell High School's Senior Awards Night on Saturday, May 28. The $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a graduating GHS student wishing to pursue post-high school education to advance a green future that is more environmentally friendly and more economically sustainable and prosperous in the long-term.

Applicants were asked to write two essays, one about their plans to create a greener future, and the other describing past relevant experiences. Mr. Savarese, who plans to study Environmental Science and Creative Writing at Oberlin College, explained, "Environmental science seems to offer me a way to use science to actually help the world be a better place." Mr. Savarese plans to work with students to make his future campus greener, raise awareness about environmental issues, and inspire people to get involved.

Scholarship founder, 2001 GHS graduate Tyler Huebner, added, "D.J.'s commitment to a greener future is already evident, from fundraising over $600 for clean water projects to his use of paperless graduation party invitations. I look forward to seeing what's next from this amazing young man."

2009 Green Futures Scholarship Awarded to GHS Senior Sarah Robbins

GRINNELL, Iowa, June 3, 2009

The second annual Green Futures Scholarship was awarded to graduating senior Sarah Robbins at Grinnell High School's Senior Awards Night on Saturday, May 23. The $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a graduating GHS student wishing to pursue post-high school education to advance a green future that is more environmentally friendly, yet also more economically sustainable and prosperous in the long-term.

Applicants were asked to write two essays, one about their plans to create a greener future, and the other describing past relevant experiences. Ms. Robbins, this year's winner, explained, "A major part of creating environmental change is by word of mouth, or television, radio, or newspaper. I plan that, as a journalist, I can report on environmentally friendly projects, and I can encourage the public to participate in these projects."

Scholarship founder, GHS 2001 graduate Tyler Huebner, added, "As we are starting to see, the green future will encompass every aspect of our lives, and the intent of this scholarship is to support and encourage students that will pursue a green future no matter what traditional professional path they choose. Using journalism to educate the public is an incredibly important element of creating the green future, and I am excited for Sarah and her endeavors."

The Green Futures Scholarship is an annual award at Grinnell High School, and this year's award is the second of five years of guaranteed funding. Efforts are underway to raise money to endow the scholarship in perpetuity. More information is available at the scholarship's official website www.greenfuturesscholarship.org. Inaugural Green Futures Scholarship Awarded to GHS Senior Ben Francis

GRINNELL, Iowa, May 26, 2008

The first-ever Green Futures Scholarship was awarded to graduating senior Ben Francis at Grinnell High School's Senior Awards Night on Saturday May 24. The scholarship, in the amount of $1,000, was inaugurated to award a GHS student wishing to pursue post-high school education relating to the "green future." In this sense, "green" means more environmentally friendly, yet also more economically sustainable and prosperous in the long-term.

Scholarship founder, GHS 2001 graduate Tyler Huebner, explains his reasons for starting up this scholarship: "The green future will encompass every aspect of our lives, so students may be interested in studying business, engineering, technology, land development, policy, law, marketing, media and the list goes on. The intent of the scholarship is to support and encourage students that will pursue a green future no matter what traditional professional path they choose. Most importantly, Iowa is right in the middle of the discussions on local, national, and global scales."

Applicants were asked to write two essays, one about their plans to create a greener future, and the other describing past relevant experiences. Mr. Francis, this year's winner, explained, "I want to go into a field that involves generation of electricity through cleaner methods than used today. In this area I wish to be involved in one of two areas of research, either research of new ways to generate electricity, or on how to make renewable electricity able to compete in the free market."

The Green Futures Scholarship will become an annual award at Grinnell High School for at least another four years, and efforts are underway to raise enough money to endow the scholarship in perpetuity.
